NC Eminent Domain Law Firm To Host Informational Meeting for Property Owners Affected by Durham's Controversial 'East End Connector' Project
Ranked Among DOT's Top Ten Statewide Priorities, Contentious Project Now Acquiring Land
DURHAM, N.C., Sept. 5, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- The NC Eminent Domain Law Firm, a division of the Law Offices of James Scott Farrin, will host an informational meeting for property owners affected by the East End Connector Project that will connect US 70 and NC 147.
Property owners are invited to the free informational session at the Downtown Durham Marriott on September 20 beginning at 7 p.m. The Department of Transportation has ranked the East End Connector among its top ten priorities around the state. While the project, with a forecasted budget of $182 million, is slated to start construction in April 2014, land acquisition is just getting underway.
"We'll Just Have to Get a Trailer"
The Independent Weekly devoted a major story to concerns about the project, noting, "The highway, cloverleafs and ramps will carve up adjoining neighborhoods, which must endure noise, pollution and an indelibly altered community. And some owners worry that the Department of Transportation won't compensate them fairly."
In the Indy story, Deborah Milan of Angier Avenue is quoted as saying, "You pay the house off with what they give you, and you may not have enough left over to buy a new house. We'll just have to get a trailer. I sure don't want to go back out in no rental."
At the NC Eminent Domain Law Firm session, property owners will receive a "crash course" on their rights and best practices when dealing with the government during eminent domain negotiations.
"Property Owners Need to Know Their Rights"
NC Eminent Domain Law Firm attorney Stan Abrams, a former litigator for the NC Department of Justice representing the state in eminent domain cases, will lead the session and discuss the rights property owners have when negotiating the value of their property.
"Too often property owners do not have the right information to effectively negotiate with the government in eminent domain cases," said Abrams. "The fact is, the Department of Transportation's position is to pay as little as possible for your property -- which is exactly why property owners need to know their rights."
