NBA Legend Dikembe Mutombo Visits UNICEF Programs in Haiti
NEW YORK, Nov. 3, 2010 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Eight-time NBA All-Star and Global Ambassador for NBA Cares Dikembe Mutombo recently traveled to Port au Prince, Haiti where he played a few rounds of half court with children at a UNICEF supported Sport & Peace program. Widely respected for his humanitarian and philanthropic endeavors, Mutombo visited UNICEF programs assisting the earthquake affected population, including a program solely focused on improving water and sanitation. In response to the outbreak of cholera UNICEF is assisting government and humanitarian aid partners in carrying out cholera information and training sessions with health care workers and hygiene promoters so they are better prepared to raise public awareness in the capital of Port-au-Prince. UNICEF is also supporting cholera awareness and hygiene promotion activities in schools and camps and through mass media in Port-au-Prince and areas surrounding the Artibonite River, where the majority of cholera cases have originated.
