VIENNA, Va., April 13, 2015 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Navy Federal Credit Union, the world's largest credit union, announced today its participation in the nationally recognized Purple Up! campaign, aimed at recognizing the sacrifices made by active duty military families and their children. April is the Month of the Military Child, and the credit union is displaying its appreciation by encouraging its workforce of over 12,000 employees to wear purple on April 15.
The color purple is chosen as the campaign's signature color because it symbolizes the combination of all branches of the military: Army green, Coast Guard blue, Air Force blue, Marine red and Navy blue.
"Our service members are always at the top of our minds, but it's equally important to remember the efforts made by their families," said Jaspreet Chawla, Navy Federal's Assistant Vice President of Member Acquisition. "Kids with an active duty parent often face stressful environments, and can lead demanding lives compared to their peers."
Last year, Navy Federal employees showed tremendous appreciation and support toward these children by wearing purple for the Purple Up! campaign, and this year they'll celebrate the campaign throughout all corporate campuses. Many of the credit union's 265 worldwide branches will also host kid-friendly financial activities in support of the campaign.
In addition to Purple Up!, Navy Federal Youth Week, from April 11 to 18, will feature product incentives and educational seminars at schools to encourage early savings practices among adolescents. Members under 18 will receive a monetary incentive for opening youth savings or checking accounts, or prepaid debit cards—all aimed at fostering smart spending habits among teens.
"Among our more than 5 million members, 12% are under the age of 18," said Chawla. "Developing smart spending habits at an early age is one of the best ways to prepare youths for the financial responsibilities they'll face later in life."
