NAVTEQ Selected by National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency (NGA) to Support the Homeland Security Infrastructure Protection (HSIP) Program
NAVTEQ to provide HSIP with fresh map data for mission critical objectives
WASHINGTON, Feb. 18 /PRNewswire/ -- NAVTEQ, the leading global provider of digital map, traffic and location data for in-vehicle, portable, wireless, government and enterprise solutions, today announced from the 2010 ESRI Federal User Conference that the NGA selected NAVTEQ to provide map data for the Homeland Security Infrastructure Protection (HSIP) Program.
The National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency (NGA) is a Department of Defense combat support agency and a member of the national Intelligence Community (IC). NGA develops imagery and map-based intelligence solutions for U. S. national defense, homeland security and safety of navigation. NGA plays central role in supporting emergency prevention, preparedness and response capabilities of United States government departments and agencies, including the Department of Homeland Security, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), and the State and Local first responder community, as well as working with government entities in Canada and Mexico to coordinate and support emergency management across borders.
In 2002, the Homeland Security Infrastructure Protection (HSIP) Program was created as a collaborative project between NGA and the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS). HSIP provides government officials with information necessary to support the response and recovery efforts for natural and man-made disasters.
"NAVTEQ recognizes NGA's requirement for an accurate and comprehensive set of geospatial data. Finding the nearest hospital, conducting line-of-sight analyses, matching street addresses to locations and many other applications are critical to the HSIP program's mission critical needs," said Roy Kolstad, vice president, Enterprise Americas, NAVTEQ. "These objectives are significantly enhanced by using NAVTEQ® map data, which includes geospatial information such as roads, cities, political boundaries, physical features, places, railroads, census boundaries, parks, schools, fire departments, police departments, hospitals and many other geospatial vector data layers."
To keep the map database up-to-date, NAVTEQ deploys a variety of maintenance methodologies to capture and validate changes to the road network and points of interest, including use of geographic analysts who drive millions of miles annually. NAVTEQ continues to innovate and lead the way with data collection technology. The recently announced NAVTEQ True represents a new era in data collection, and utilizes technologies unique in the industry in both the scale and quality with which collection can take place. Through a combination of LIDAR, panoramic and high resolution cameras, GPS and IMU positioning, all of the data collected is geo-referenced, resulting in a more highly detailed digital representation of the road network.
