Natural Hormone Replacement Pioneer Challenges Testosterone Critics
BioTE Medical Founder Dr. Gary Donovitz cites incomplete and misinterpreted research used in media interviews
DALLAS, Aug. 8, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- BioTE Medical Founder Dr. Gary Donovitz MD today challenged recent reports that have been critical of testosterone replacement therapy. Recent media coverage has reported that testosterone replacement therapy was over-prescribed by physicians, often unnecessary and in some cases dangerous for consumers.

Dr. Donovitz, whose company BioTE Medical is a leading provider of natural hormone replacement therapy using subcutaneous pellets, was critical of what he called a general lack of depth in research. Donovitz said, "We see significant flaws in the information that's being presented to the public in several recent interviews. Studies on certain product types are being applied to all testosterone therapy. In addition, credible research which is essential to a full understanding of testosterone therapy has not been considered."
A national consumer news and advocacy publication recently published an article that was critical of testosterone replacement therapy. The publication cited risks of topically applied pharmaceutical products such as Androgel 1.62% and Axiron. The article referenced a possible increased risk of heart attacks, strokes and other cardiovascular events from the products. The article also cited accidental exposure to women and children that could result in negative side effects. Because the focus of their article was largely limited to high-profile pharmaceutical products, Dr. Donovitz said the research is incomplete. Dr. Donovitz added, "We are in agreement with the consumer group regarding these topically applied products. The products use synthetic hormones and we've known about the dangers of synthetics for years. However, the publication needs to complete their research and understand the benefits of using natural hormone replacement. Presently, they appear to be applying their findings on these 2 products to the entire field of testosterone replacement therapy which makes their article incomplete, misleading and more likely to cause confusion among consumers."
In another recent media interview, a Dallas-based physician voiced concern over what he called a lack of long-term data on the benefits of testosterone therapy and its possible effects on heart and prostate health. According to Dr. Donovitz, credible research does exist. He added, "There are years of research and studies that support natural hormone replacement therapy. With BioTE Medical's natural testosterone replacement therapy, there is no increased risk of blood clots, heart attacks or strokes. In fact, we have multiple studies that show that bio-identical hormone replacement therapy is protective to the prostate, the heart and the brain. The benefits to the patients, both men and women, allows for healthier lives as people age and they require less drugs for disease management."
Dr. Donovitz said that he is reaching out to media outlets with information that will increase their understanding of the field of hormone replacement therapy. He added, "We understand and appreciate the role that media plays in the area of consumer advocacy. However, it's also important that the media take the time to understand the entire picture of facts and research before they publish articles. We believe the information we're sharing will assist them to present more objective and thorough information to their readers."
