But, without taking proper precautions, you may find yourself spending more hours patching pipes than working on your tan. Here are four tips on how to proactively prevent potential plumbing, sewer and drain system problems this season.

Dirty clothes are the sign of a successful summer day. They also mean your washing machine is likely working overtime. Check hoses for ruptures and turn valves on and off to test for leaks. Rubber washing machine hoses should be replaced approximately every three years.

Warm weather is the only excuse needed for a cookout. Just be cautious of what you're putting down your garbage disposal -- grease and fats, bones, peels and other stringy foods should be avoided. Also, check for tight and leak-free disposer and dishwasher connections.

Don't pay for unused energy. While on vacation, turn down the temperature of your water heater. Also remember any water heater over 11 years old is a candidate to be replaced. Summer rainwater can expose leaky or broken pipes after it's too late. Excess water in a yard could be the result of a damaged sewer line and may contain waste from the home.
