Pet Owners Continue Trend of Giving Pets Human Monikers
BREA, Calif., Jan. 8, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- For the second straight year, "Bella" and "Max" reign as 'top dogs' as the modern-day monikers led the list of most common dog and cat names in 2013. "The majority of the top 10 pet monikers are also among the most popular baby names in the United States," said Curtis Steinhoff, director of Corporate Communications at VPI. "This trend illustrates the close bond that pet owners have with their pets. Many people view their dog and cat as family members and they are naming them to reflect that human-animal bond."
Last year, "Bella" topped both the most common dog and cat name list with "Max" coming in as the second most common moniker in the VPI database. The majority of the names that made the top 10 dog and cat lists also made the list in 2012. Names that are trending upward include "Coco" and "Lola" among dogs, and "Jack," "Luna" and "Milo" for cats.
While human names continue to dominate VPI's pet name popularity, there are plenty of pet owners who opt for a moniker of the less conventional variety, such as "Sir Knuckles da Dragon" and "Cheeto Burrito."
