Nationally Recognized Numismatist, Leon Hendrickson, Passes Away and Leaves Behind Legacy
In the wake of Hendrickson's passing, U.S. Money Reserve remembers the well-known numismatist, who stood for honesty, integrity
AUSTIN, Texas, July 28, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- Leon Hendrickson, well-respected numismatist, founder of SilverTowne and World War II veteran, died at his home in Winchester, Ind., on Sunday, July 23, 2017, surrounded by his family. He was 90.
Cherished by the coin industry, Hendrickson made an unforgettable impact on his colleagues, his community and the organizations he worked closely with in a career spanning over 60 years. His legacy will surely continue in the wake of his passing.
"Leon will be deeply missed by our organization, and everyone in the numismatic community," said Philip N. Diehl, president of U.S. Money Reserve and chairman of the Industry Council for Tangible Assets (ICTA), known as the "watchdog" for the rare coins, paper money, and precious-metals bullion communities. "He contributed tirelessly to our field with the utmost integrity. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and those close to him."
Hendrickson spent a lifelong career dedicated to the coin industry. He was the adored patriarch and founder of the highly-respected coin dealer, SilverTowne, along with The Coin Vault. He was also the former president of the Professional Numismatists Guild (PNG), Central States Numismatic Society (CSNS) and Indiana State Numismatic Association (ISNA).
Hendrickson first became interested in coins while working with his beloved wife and high school sweetheart, Ruhama, as part-owners at her family's restaurant in Winchester, Ind. This is where Hendrickson famously started collecting coins he found interesting in a cigar box under the lunch counter. These humble beginnings positively shaped Hendrickson's character. In 1949 he would go on to establish SilverTowne and build the company to be one of the country's largest and most respected dealers of rare coins, modern coins and precious metals.
Widely-known as a champion for honesty, integrity and hard work, Hendrickson had an outstanding ability to motivate and inspire others around him.
Having earned more than 22 accomplishments and awards, Hendrickson was a nationally recognized numismatist. Hendrickson was also an active member of more than 30 numismatic organizations. Hendrickson's memberships include being a life member of the ANA (American Numismatics Association) and PNG (Professional Numismatists Guild).
A World War II Veteran, Hendrickson honorably served in the U.S. Navy.
According to the SilverTowne website, "Leon and Ruhama Hendrickson leave behind the legacy of SilverTowne and The Coin Vault. Three children, David Hendrickson (wife Debbie), two daughters Kathy Barker (husband Steve) and Tanda Abel (husband Tony). 10 grandchildren, 20 great grandchildren and 2 great-great grandchildren."
A celebration of life service for Leon Hendrickson will be held in Winchester, Ind., on Friday, July 28, 2017.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be given to: Leon and Ruhama Hendrickson and Family Scholarship Fund, 213 S. Main St., Winchester, IN 47394 or Hendrickson Trust Fund for Local Out Reach, 1212 E. 100 S, Winchester, IN 47394. Walker Funeral Home in Winchester is entrusted with the arrangements.
