STATE COLLEGE, Pa., Sept. 11, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- AccuWeather Global Weather Center -- AccuWeather, Inc., the global leader in weather information and digital media, today announced that the U.S. National Weather Service (NWS), a division of National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), has signed a licensing agreement that grants NWS the right to use two of AccuWeather's unique technology patents.
AccuWeather's unique patented technologies help to geographically pinpoint observed weather conditions and other observed events. These technologies allow for information on the events to be delivered to individuals through the use of mobile devices. This capability for providing forecasts and warnings on hazardous weather conditions will be utilized in collaboration with the NWS.
"The National Weather Service and AccuWeather have worked closely together to ensure the safety of businesses and individuals across the United States, helping citizens to become better prepared for severe weather," said Barry Lee Myers, CEO of AccuWeather. "We are proud to be at the forefront of this ground-breaking government and weather industry partnership and thank our colleagues at the NWS for their diligence and dedication, joining together to bring the advantage of AccuWeather's proprietary technologies forward to improve people's lives."
Myers added, "The license value of AccuWeather's technology patents is worth upwards of seven figures per license, but AccuWeather provided this license to the NWS at no cost, as a public service."
Barry Lee Myers is the leading expert in enhanced cooperation between government and the weather industry. Since 1990, he has been a member of the Board of Directors and the Chief Government Relations Officer of the American Weather and Climate Industry Association, the weather industry's trade association. "This is a wonderful step forward in terms of cooperative efforts to help protect and inform people and businesses throughout the United States," said Dr. Joel N. Myers, Founder, President, and Chairman of AccuWeather. "A strong relationship between the NWS and AccuWeather ensures greater availability of the most detailed and accurate severe weather information possible, protecting the lives and property of enterprises and individuals throughout the country."
