LANDOVER, Md., March 6, 2018 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The USATF Masters Track & Field Indoor Championship returns to the Prince George's Sports and Learning Complex in Landover, Maryland, March 16th to 18th. This year's 1,219 participants, an all-time record for any Masters Indoor Championship, are competing in 2,887 individual events. USATF Masters Track & Field is the premier organization for masters track & field events in the US.
World Class competitors include Kathy Martin and Bob Lida, the Overall World Masters Athletics and USATF Masters 2017 Outstanding Athletes of the year! Kathy Martin, 66, Northport, NY the greatest female middle-distance runner in masters history who has already set SIX world records in her new age group, and Bob Lida, 81, Wichita Kansas, who holds the indoor world M80 marks in the 60m and 200m. 2017 World Masters Athletics Event Group, Athlete of the Year honorees Jeferson Souza, 42, combined events, Bill Harvey, 72, throws, and Rita Hanscom, 63, WMA runner-up combined events, will be present. Also competing is USATF Masters Hall of Famer Oneithea "Neni" Lewis. Queens, NY, age 57. Neni holds the W40 and W45 world records in the weight throw.
Washington Metro Area Stars will be competing in many events! They include the beloved Masters Hall of Famer Larry Colbert, 81 from Bowie, MD, who is the namesake of the PG Sportsplex arena track, he will run the 60m and 200m sprints, he is a world/national sprint superstar and coach who helped conceive the first Landover USATF masters championship in 2009. Hall of Famer, Bruce McBarnette, Sterling, VA, 65, has set 12 world masters titles in the High Jump; Ken Moss,70, of Leesburg, VA, currently holds the worlds best throws this season in his age group in the weight throw and super weight; Alisa Harvey, 53, Manassas, VA, 1991 Pan-AM Games winner, is entered in the 800m and 400m; Oscar Peyton, Accokeek MD, now 65, is the M60 world and American 200m indoor record holder; Ty "Rip" Brown, 73, Washington, DC, is the indoor world M65 & M70 record holder in 60m hurdles; Don McGee, Clinton MD, 52, returning 60m & 200m national champ and 2016 100/200m world champ; and Rose Green, Upper Marlboro, MD, a 78 year-old sprinting great grandmother!
World record setting centenarians: Julia Hawkins, a 102-year-old champ hailing from Baton Rouge, will be the oldest competitor in history at any USATF national championship she will run the 60m. Retired pilot from Hubbard, Texas, Orville Rogers, 100, will be the oldest man to compete at the meet this year and is expected to set a number of centurion age group records. The oldest local competitor is Dixon Hemphill, a young 93, of Fairfax, VA, whom Rogers, ran with (albeit in different age groups) and narrowly beat in an exciting 60m dash in 2017 which was seen widely in a viral video.
Spectators admitted free. The meet is at Prince George's Sports & Learning Complex 8001 Sheriff Road, Landover, Maryland 20785 The meet runs early morning (8am) through all day Friday, Saturday and ends by 4pm Sunday.
