National Stroke Association Launches Campaign for National Stroke Awareness Month in May
CENTENNIAL, Colo., April 26, 2016 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- One third of people in the U.S. cannot identify a single symptom of stroke, as a result National Stroke Association is educating the public about stroke risk and prevention through a National Stroke Awareness Month campaign in May.
At the heart of the campaign is a video, StreetSmart, in which National Stroke Association took to the streets of Denver to learn what passersby know about stroke.
"We were surprised by people's responses which ranged from no knowledge about stroke to some knowledge of the seriousness of stroke," said Robyn Moore, Chief Executive Officer of National Stroke Association. "The public is alarmingly uninformed about stroke which can happen to anyone at any time. It's vital that the public be aware of stroke's symptoms and act fast to get someone experiencing a stroke to an emergency room."
A stroke is a "brain attack" that occurs when blood flow to the brain is interrupted by a blood clot or broken blood vessel. Stroke is the fifth leading cause of death in the United States and a leading cause of adult disability.
Moore said the association's grassroots campaign asks the public to help spread stroke awareness through several channels, ranging from social media and downloading resource materials to becoming involved in legislative advocacy at the state and federal levels.
Looking for ideas how you can play your part in raising stroke awareness? A unique idea generator tool asks a few questions and then suggests a good fit for getting involved with the stroke community.
"Our campaign gives people the tools to become informed and spread our message about stroke," said Moore. "Even something as simple as posting on Facebook or sending one of our colorful Ecards about stroke risks to family members and friends will make a difference in getting everyone to wise up about the symptoms of stroke and prevention."
