National Society of High School Scholars (NSHSS) Selected By The Case Foundation To Celebrate Fearless Role Models
Interactive Video Sweepstakes and Campaign Will Celebrate the Start of the School Year
WASHINGTON, Aug. 19, 2013 /PRNewswire/ --The National Society of High School Scholars (NSHSS), an international honor society organization dedicated to highlighting the accomplishments, outstanding leadership, scholarship, and community commitment of high school students, announced today that it will team up with the Case Foundation in a campaign to celebrate fearless role models during the Back to School season, as part of the foundation's larger "Be Fearless" initiative.
From August 15 to September 13, 2013, students will have the opportunity to submit an Instagram video, answering the question: "Who taught you what it means to be fearless?" The competition will be hosted on the Case Foundation's Facebook page, using the accompanying hashtags of #BeFearless and/or #NSHSS. Participants will have the chance to win one of three iPad Minis just in time for the new school year, and as part of the campaign, the Case Foundation is awarding a $5,000 grant to NSHSS.
"We seek to inspire, activate and empower the next generation of fearless young changemakers," explains Allyson Burns, the Case Foundation's Senior Vice President of Marketing and Communications. "Working with NSHSS, we hope to recognize students who are fearless and celebrate those who have inspired us all to take risks, be bold and make failure matter in life."
The Case Foundation, created in 1997 by online technology pioneers Jean and Steve Case, invests in people and ideas that can change the world. The back to school Instagram campaign is part of the foundation's broader efforts to leverage and experiment with new technologies and entrepreneurial approaches across the social sector. The campaign was announced at NSHSS' annual Scholars Day.
Scholars Day is NSHSS' signature event, which was attended by more than 1,100 diverse scholars, parents and educators at Georgetown University in Washington, D.C. on Saturday, August 17th. The event recognized top students with a variety of different scholarships presented by key corporate partners. Claes Nobel, senior member of the Nobel prize family and founder of the National Society of High School Scholars, delivered a keynote address titled "Learn, Lead and Change the World."
Presentation of the Claes Nobel World Betterment Award, honoring great role models for young people, was presented to two individuals: Greg Goff, President and CEO of Tesoro Corporation, who was recognized for leading Tesoro's significant environmental, safety and volunteerism projects; and Todd Corley, Senior Vice President and Global Chief Diversity Officer of Abercrombie & Fitch, recognized for his diversity leadership and for engaging individuals – especially millennials – to build strong corporate social responsibility platforms that promote societal change. Key executives from the U.S. Department of State, Central Intelligence Agency and Aflac also gave remarks.
"I am convinced that NSHSS scholars will be among the world's future Nobel Laureates. I encourage these and all young scholars to be guided by love, truth and compassion," said Claes Nobel, NSHSS Chairman and Co-Founder. "The World Betterment Legacy of my uncle, Dr. Alfred Nobel, coupled with my life mission to promote peace, environmental sustainability and earth ethics, have been my own guiding stars. Be Fearless!"
