National Safety Council Statement on President Trump Declaring the Opioid Crisis a National Emergency

ITASCA, Ill., Aug. 11, 2017 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The National Safety Council commends President Trump for the decision to declare the opioid crisis a national emergency. We are in the midst of the most fatal drug epidemic in American history. It is time we formally regard it as such, and this declaration does exactly that.

However, actions always speak louder than words. Simply declaring a crisis does not advance our objective to end it. In order to truly save lives, we should follow where the evidence leads us by adequately funding effective prevention and treatment measures. Without that, we might find the right words but we will not bring about real change.
