ITASCA, Ill., Jan. 11, 2017 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Deborah Hersman, president and CEO of the National Safety Council, has been named by Secretary Foxx to serve on the Department of Transportation Advisory Committee on Automation in Transportation. The advisory panel was established to provide counsel regarding technology implementation that can save lives and help eliminate preventable fatalities in all modes of transportation.
"Hersman's dedication as a safety advocate and long-time multi-modal transportation expert is exactly the right fit for the Advisory Committee," said Rose McMurray, former NHTSA and FMCSA senior executive.
In October, with NHTSA, FHWA, and FMCSA, Hersman helped kick off the Road to Zero coalition effort to end roadway fatalities in 30 years. Working in partnership with highway safety experts, manufacturers, and advocacy organizations around the country, the Road to Zero coalition is focused on promoting proven lifesaving strategies, and new technologies that can reduce fatalities on our roadways. Tens of thousands of preventable deaths occur on the roadways each year.
Prior to leading NSC, Hersman served as chairman of the National Transportation Safety Board. She has also testified before Congress in support of establishing an automated vehicle policy.
"With new technologies and innovative approaches to mobility, we hold the keys to reach a future without transportation fatalities," said Hersman. "I applaud Secretary Foxx for his leadership on technology implementation in all modes of transportation, and am honored to contribute to this important effort."
