NEWSMAKER: Maryland Governor and Democratic Governor Association Chairman Martin O'Malley
TOPIC: How Democratic Governors are leading the way on creating jobs and opportunity in the states
DATE: Monday, November 14
TIME: 10:00 AM
ROOM: Holeman Lounge
BACKGROUND: After a successful 2011 cycle, where the DGA held seats in a tough environment in West Virginia and Kentucky and helped defeat Issue 2 in Ohio, Governor O'Malley will talk about how Democratic governors were able to withstand national trends by focusing on what matters most to voters: jobs. Now, with the 2012 election around the corner, Governor O'Malley will outline the important role Democratic governors will play in the party's resurgence.
First elected governor in 2006, Governor O'Malley was re-elected in 2010 with 56 percent of the vote. He will discuss how the state was able to cut $6.8 billion in spending, more than any previous Maryland governor, as the state made record investments in education. Maryland's public school system has been ranked number one for three years in a row.
