National Press Club Statement on Charlie Rose

WASHINGTON, Dec. 19, 2017 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The National Press Club Board of Governors voted unanimously at its December 17^th, 2017 meeting to rescind its Fourth Estate Lifetime Achievement Award presented to Charlie Rose in 2014 and the accompanying honorary club membership. Charges about Rose's conduct, acknowledged in part by him, led three news organizations to sever ties with him. The board concluded such conduct does not represent the values of the National Press Club nor the criteria for the award, which goes to a journalist who "has achieved distinction for a lifetime of contributions to American journalism."

The board reaffirmed the commitment of the National Press Club to the right of all journalists to pursue their work free from harassment or discrimination. It also called on the National Press Club Journalism Institute, the educational arm of the club, to continue its professional development programs to assist journalists to cover the story of sexual harassment and to foster newsroom cultures where all journalists can thrive.
