WASHINGTON, Feb. 24, 2015 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- In commemoration of Sunshine Week, the National Press Club will offer reporters on March 16 a hands-on tutorial in getting faster and better results from Freedom of Information Act requests.
Sunshine Week (http://www.sunshineweek.org/) is a nationwide celebration of access to public information that occurs every March.
The seminar, "FOIA Faster," will teach participants how to obtain government information more rapidly by using techniques that managers of hedge funds and energy analysts have been profiting from for decades.
FOIA Resource Center founder Lisette Garcia, J.D., will lead the class and will teach:
- must-have elements of a FOIA request;
- keys to creating a compelling fee waiver;
- the responsibilities and consequences a request triggers in the government;
- how to keep departments and agencies on schedule;
- how to ensure your appeal will work even if the initial request was denied.
The event is $5 for NPC members and $10 for non-members. Please register here: http://www.press.org/events/national-press-club-presents-sunshine-week-event-foia-faster
The seminar is cosponsored by the NPC's Press Freedom Committee, which leads club efforts to fight repression of reporters and to promote transparency, and by the non-profit NPC Journalism Institute, which offers practical training for communications professionals centered on high standards, ethical conduct and best practices.
