WASHINGTON, Dec. 12, 2016 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Enforcement of federal immigration law appears to be a priority for President-elect Donald Trump. U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has identified roughly 300 jurisdictions as sanctuary cities. Eliminating these sanctuaries that shield undocumented immigrants from arrest and prosecution may well be on the top of his agenda.
On Wednesday, Dec. 14, at noon, Jessica Vaughan, from the Center for Immigration Studies will face William Stock, from the American Immigration Lawyers Association, on the current state of affairs regarding sanctuary cities at a National Press Club Newsmaker news conference in the club's Zenger Room.
Vaughan has argued that sanctuary jurisdictions present a significant public safety problem. She says that, over the past two years sanctuary policies have resulted in the release of more than 15,000 criminal aliens that ICE was seeking to deport.
On the other side of the issue, Stock has argued against the position taken by the Department of Justice that jurisdictions with sanctuary cities should be disqualified from getting federal law enforcement funds. He believes that the federal government cannot commandeer state and local resources for federal immigration law enforcement without the states' agreement.
