PHOENIX, May 15, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Who can you thank today? This week is National Police Week and today is Peace Officers Memorial Day—a tribute to local, state and federal law enforcement officers who have died in the line of duty. According to the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund, an average of one officer dies in the line of duty every 58 hours—or approximately 150 every year. In 1962 President John F. Kennedy designated May 15th as the day to remember those who sacrificed their lives while serving.
Services for this 33rd Annual National Peace Officers' Memorial Day will be held today, May 15th at 11a.m. EDT at the West Front of the U.S. Capitol, Washington, D.C. This year, 286 fallen law enforcement heroes have been added to the memorial. There will also be a Fraternal Order of Police/Fraternal Order of Police Auxiliary Wreath-Laying Ceremony to immediately follow.
As a leader in the transportation industry, U-Haul Company relies heavily on our police forces in many situations, and we are grateful for the sacrifices they make daily in every community across the United States. We thank our peace officers and acknowledge the sacrifice of those who have lost their lives protecting their communities.
Here is a challenge U-Haul would like to make to everyone reading: Will you make an effort to find a law enforcement officer today and tell them "Thank you!" for all they do? This is a simple and easy way to remember and honor the sacrifices so many others have made…and the willingness of all of our police officers to make the ultimate sacrifice every day.
