The Ethel LeFrak Award, a permanent award established by the late Mrs. LeFrak and the LeFrak Family to honor an individual who brings national or international attention to osteoporosis through strength and leadership in improving the diagnosis, treatment or prevention of the disease, will be presented to Ethel S. Siris, M.D., a renowned osteoporosis expert and leader. Dr. Siris is the Madeline C. Stabile Professor of Medicine at Columbia University Medical Center and Director of the Toni Stabile Center for the Prevention and Treatment of Osteoporosis, Columbia-Presbyterian Medical Center both in New York City. NOF is proud to preserve Mrs. LeFrak's legacy and commitment to osteoporosis prevention by awarding this year's Ethel LeFrak Award to Dr. Siris.
The Generation Award, recognizing an individual who brings national prominence to the importance of preventing osteoporosis and protecting generations of strength through a lifetime of bone health, will be presented to best selling author, Gail Sheehy. As the author of more than 16 books, including the revolutionary Passages, Ms. Sheehy has changed the way millions of men and women view the stages of their lives. NOF is proud to honor Ms. Sheehy with The Generation Award in appreciation for her diligent reporting on women's health issues and leadership of its Generations of Strength Campaign.
"We are thrilled to honor Dr. Ethel Siris and Gail Sheehy with two of NOF's most prestigious awards," said Amy Porter, CEO and executive director of the National Osteoporosis Foundation. "With 52 million Americans currently affected by osteoporosis and low bone mass, our goal is to lower this number by educating the public and health professionals on ways to prevent, diagnose and treat osteoporosis. Through their daily work and commitment to our cause, Dr. Siris and Ms. Sheehy are helping ensure that future generations won't know the pain and suffering of osteoporosis."
Emmy Award-winning journalist, Juju Chang will serve as Mistress of Ceremonies for the Generations of Strength Luncheon. A special correspondent and guest anchor for ABC News "Nightline," Ms. Chang also reports regularly for "Good Morning America" and "20/20" and won one of her Emmys for reporting on the California wildfires.
In addition to the award honorees, NOF will also recognize Sharon Marantz Walsh for her service as past Chairwoman of the annual luncheon and the Generations of Strength Campaign National Host Committee and corporate partner, CIRCA, the leading international buyer of fine jewelry, diamonds and watches, for its ongoing support and generous contribution to the luncheon.
"CIRCA is honored to partner with the National Osteoporosis Foundation and applauds the organization for its progress in educating the public about osteoporosis prevention," said Jeffrey Singer, Co-Founder, CIRCA. "The partnership is a natural fit and we are proud supporters of NOF's efforts to help millions of Americans lead happier, healthier lives."
In the U.S. today, one in two women and up to one in four men will break a bone in their lifetime due to osteoporosis. The disease affects more women than those at risk for heart attack, stroke and breast cancer combined and more men than those affected by prostate cancer. To protect future generations from the effects of this debilitating disease, NOF is working to change the perception of osteoporosis from an older person's disease by focusing on messages of prevention and empowerment.
In May, NOF launched a new awareness campaign, Break Free from Osteoporosis, encouraging the public to know their risk factors for the disease and make the lifestyle changes needed to prevent it. NOF is continuing to spread the campaign messages in an effort to make bone health a priority for all Americans.
