Mayor Coleman, who served as NLC's First Vice President in 2013, was elected by the membership to lead the organization for a one-year term in 2014 and will play a key role in shaping NLC's priorities and directing the organization's advocacy, education, research and membership activities.
"America's cities are its foundation. And that's because when our cities are strong, our country prospers," said Saint Paul Mayor Chris Coleman. "The National League of Cities plays a crucial role in moving cities forward. As a concentrated resource that cities can turn to for information, advocacy and help, I look forward to helping the NLC become an even better organization than it is today. The work of the NLC has made it the most relevant advocate in the country creating strong, vibrant cities. I look forward to furthering this legacy."
Mayor Coleman has been an NLC Board Member since 2010 and served as Chair of its Council on Youth, Education and Families in 2008.
Mayor Coleman was first elected Saint Paul Mayor in 2005 after several years as a city councilmember, community and neighborhood leader. He was overwhelmingly re-elected to a third term this November. In his eight years as mayor, he has been an advocate for education and public safety, and was instrumental in championing the Central Corridor Light Rail line – the largest transit project ever undertaken in the state of Minnesota.
His priorities as Mayor include working to close the achievement gap, creating sustainable and responsible budgets and investing in the neighborhoods and infrastructure of Saint Paul.
The National League of Cities is dedicated to helping city leaders build better communities. NLC is a resource and advocate for 19,000 cities, towns and villages, representing more than 218 million Americans.
