National Leader In Pediatric Surgery And Research To Head Division Of Pediatric Surgery At Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children's Hospital Of Chicago
CHICAGO, June 19, 2015 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Fizan Abdullah, MD, PhD, has been appointed Division Head of Pediatric Surgery at Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children's Hospital of Chicago and Professor of Pediatric Surgery at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine, effective August 1, 2015. Dr. Abdullah comes from Johns Hopkins Medicine where he is an Associate Professor of Surgery in the Division of Pediatric Surgery, the Program Director for the Pediatric Surgery Fellowship, and Assistant Program Director for the Residency in General Surgery. He also is an Associate Professor of International Health at Bloomberg School of Public Health in Baltimore and is a well-recognized leader in the fields of pediatric surgery, health services research, and global health. He has published over 100 peer-reviewed original research articles.

In the recent past, he has lead the American Pediatric Surgical Association (APSA) national working group charged with developing evidence-based standards and practice guidelines. Additionally, he was appointed to the combined Task Force for Children's Surgical Care, a combined effort between the American College of Surgeons, Children's Hospital Association, APSA, Surgical Section of the American Academy of Pediatrics among other leading national organizations which were charged with defining optimal system requirements necessary for the delivery of safe and quality surgical care to children across the United States.

The ABS aims to help protect the American public by assessing qualifications of individuals in the field of surgery and awarding Board Certification. In this capacity, Dr. Abdullah also serves on the Pediatric Surgery Board of the ABS which helps certify US pediatric surgeons.
Dr. Abdullah received his medical degree and doctorate of philosophy from the Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia. He completed his general surgery residency at Yale University and fellowship in pediatric surgery at the Children's Hospital of Los Angeles.
