National Hispanic Medical Association to Release Recommendations that Improve Hispanic Cardiovascular Disease Prevention, Access to Care and Physician Education in February 2018

WASHINGTON, Nov. 9, 2017 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- As healthcare leaders in the cardiovascular arena gather to attend the American Heart Association Scientific Sessions 2017, the National Hispanic Medical Association (NHMA) proudly announces that it will issue a comprehensive report in February 2018, highlighting its recommendations on improving cardiovascular disease prevention, access to care and physician education for the Hispanic community. NHMA is the nation's leading organization working with Hispanic physicians to improve the health of America's Hispanic and other underserved populations. In honor of American Heart Month, NHMA will host a congressional briefing with Congressman Raul Ruiz (D-CA) in February to officially announce the recommendations.

"Heart disease is the leading cause of death in the U.S. and NHMA decided it was about time that we convene a group of outstanding leaders who target Hispanics in their public health and medical programs to develop priority strategies to improve the health of our community," stated NHMA President & CEO Dr. Elena Rios.

This past year, NHMA convened a Summit Series across the U.S. to increase awareness of: cardiovascular disease (CVD) prevalence, prevention and diagnosis; access issues pertaining to CVD healthcare services; and education and advocacy training for health care professionals. The Summit Series, which took place in the cities of Austin, New York and Los Angeles, was part of NHMA's broader effort to increase health equity among Hispanics.

Along with opening remarks from legislators at all three Summits which set the stage for compelling dialogue, Summit panelists and invited attendees ranged from renowned healthcare professionals, public health officials, medical faculty, advocacy experts and patients, as well as business and association leaders, After participating in robust working group sessions at each Summit, attendees brainstormed and shared recommendations on issues surrounding CVD prevention, access to care in the Hispanic/Latino community and physician education and advocacy to improve health of all Americans.
