SACRAMENTO, Calif., June 9, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- Rev. Samuel Rodriguez and The National Hispanic Christian Leadership Conference (www.nhclc.org), also known as the Hispanic Evangelical Association, the nation's largest Christian Hispanic organization, announced that they will be awarding five scholarships, as a commitment to their NHCLC Education directive, to Hispanic students with a 3.0 or higher GPA who are actively involved in their corresponding youth ministry and attending an Assemblies of God college or university in the fall of 2011.
Dr. George O. Wood, Assemblies of God General Superintendent, said, "The General Council of the Assemblies of God is very thankful for this generous gift of scholarships for Hispanic students to attend AG colleges and universities. We are very aware that our Hispanic AG churches are the fastest growing part of our Fellowship, thus we desire more and more of our Hispanic students to be trained for future leadership at our schools. These scholarships will greatly assist us in this endeavor."
President of the NHCLC, Rev. Rodriguez, said, "We see a greater demand for higher education in the Hispanic community especially with immense growth of the Hispanic sector as reflected in the recent US Census and with the knowledge that we represent the fastest growing demographic of the Christian Church in America and the Western Hemisphere. The NHCLC is committed to increasing high school and college enrollment by 25% by 2015 through our 'Generation Fuerza' Campaign. The NHCLC is an avid proponent of higher education and honored to present these scholarships to the select Assemblies of God colleges and universities."
The NHCLC is committed to empowering Latino students to graduate from high school and continue on to higher education believing this is paramount to the future of the Hispanic community. It also aims to equip Hispanic pastors to engage their communities in the fight to decrease Latino drop-out rates by encouraging Hispanic teenagers to finish high school and pursue college education and also to encourage parents to set an example for continuing education.
The Assemblies of God colleges and universities total 19 nationwide, from coast to coast and north to south, including Puerto Rico. The Alliance for Assemblies of God Higher Education acts as an agency of the church in fulfilling its threefold mission through developing educational, spiritual and theological standards which endorsed colleges must meet, directing the national promotion of the Assemblies of God higher education, providing services to endorsed colleges through conferences and other educational resources, and developing financial resources for endorsed colleges in cooperation with AG Trust.
"We are very excited to hear about the NHCLC scholarship program that will be available to some of our Assemblies of God colleges and universities. We continue to see increased enrollment of Hispanics in our schools, for which we are very encouraged. This past fall of 2010, Hispanic students comprised 12% of our total enrollment among our 19 schools. Our earnest desire is to see that percentage continue to rise steadily," said G. Robert (Bob) Cook, Jr., Executive Vice President of The Alliance for AG Higher Education at The General Council of the Assemblies of God.
Endorsement by the Alliance for Assemblies of God Higher Education commits to a parent and student that the institution is doctrinally and spiritually sound, it is loyal to the principles and standards of the Assemblies of God, it has an effective instructional program, it is accomplishing the objectives outlined in its program, its resources are adequately administered and it is worthy of the loyalty and patronage which it receives.
