CHARLOTTE, N.C., April 22, 2019 /PRNewswire/ -- National Gypsum Company announced today the publication of its first corporate sustainability report, Building Futures™, highlighting steps the company is taking to build better futures for our associates, customers, owners, communities and the environment.
The report details the company's dedication to corporate social responsibility through resource management and community involvement initiatives and outlines key areas where National Gypsum plans to invest in sustainability, including product innovation, community impact and environmental stewardship.
"Our intention with the publication of Building Futures™ is to show customers and communities our commitment to integrating our company values into everything we do," said James Phipps, sustainability leader at National Gypsum. "We are determined to apply sustainable practices in every facet of our business and in all of the communities where we work, and by doing so we will build a better future together."
Case studies highlighted in the report illustrate the significant strides National Gypsum has made in resource management and reducing its environmental impact through projects such as reducing wastewater discharge. From 2010 to 2017, the annual wastewater discharge rate at its Pryor, Oklahoma, paper plant was reduced by the equivalent of 330 Olympic-sized swimming pools. The company also has reduced the release of reportable Toxic Release Inventory (TRI) compounds from almost 600,000 pounds per year company-wide in 2013 to just 800 pounds per year in 2017 through material substitution efforts.
Community partnerships are another major focus of National Gypsum's corporate social responsibility efforts. The Building Futures report details National Gypsum's commitment to serving communities through volunteering time, donating personal financial resources and making in-kind contributions of its high-performance products to those who need it. Individual associates are also embracing the company's mission and values by volunteering with nonprofit organizations nationwide such as American Cancer Society, Teach For America, The Gary Sinise Foundation, and Purple Heart Homes, as well as local groups in National Gypsum's headquarters city of Charlotte, North Carolina.
