National Gallery acquires a 19th century Canadian painting from the Winkworth Collection in U.K.
OTTAWA, April 1, 2015 /CNW/ - The National Gallery of Canada was able to acquire through purchase an exceptional 19th century painting from the sale of the Winkworth Collection of Canadiana today at the Christie's auction in London, UK.
The Gallery purchased a unique depiction of Montreal's urban hub, Bonsecours Market, Montreal (1880) by William Raphael, R.C.A. (1833-1914). This painting from an early Canadian artist is exceptional addition to the national collection, and celebrates the beginning of urban life and culture in Canada.
"The acquisition of this exquisite painting is particularly noteworthy in that it repatriates an important historical work of art to Canada. Its purchase further enhances our extensive holdings of works of art for the benefit of all Canadians," said the Director and CEO of the National Gallery, Marc Mayer.
This work by William Raphael, Bonsecours Market, Montreal was purchased at the auction hammer price of £180,000 using acquisition funds appropriated annually by the Government of Canada to the National Gallery of Canada. The Gallery expects to receive this painting within the next month and the curatorial team will make plans for displaying this masterpiece as part of the collection.
