National Experts Convene to Advance Disaster Resilience
Nonprofit Federal Alliance for Safe Homes (FLASH)® Hosts 2014 Annual Innovation Conference
ORLANDO, Fla., Nov. 19, 2014 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- More than 175 of the nation's leading experts will gather this week in Orlando for the nonprofit Federal Alliance for Safe Homes' (FLASH) 2014 Annual Conference—Resilience Revolution. FEMA Administrator Craig Fugate, Lt. General Russel L. Honoré (US Army Ret.), National Hurricane Center Director Dr. Rick Knabb, and The Weather Channel's Jim Cantore will headline the two-day conference that focuses on innovation in disaster preparation and resilience.
The event will bring together academics, corporate leaders, emergency managers, journalists, manufacturers, meteorologists, nonprofits, policy experts, responders, and thought leaders who will explore best practices on preparedness and mitigation in the face of earthquakes, flood, hurricanes, tornadoes, wildfires and more. Several families affected by recent disasters will share survival stories as well.
"The August Napa Valley earthquake, Hurricane Gonzalo in Bermuda, and tornadoes earlier this year are all stark reminders of the importance of building with disaster in mind," said FLASH President and CEO Leslie Chapman-Henderson. "Bringing dedicated experts together once a year to share knowledge helps advance our mission to make families safer and communities more disaster-resilient."
Panelists and speakers include NOAA Senior Leader Margaret Davidson who will share insights on how climate and disaster-resilience advocates can collaborate. Oklahoma State Representative Mark McBride and City of Moore Councilman Terry Cavnar will explain why Moore is now considered an international model for improved tornado resilience following enactment of unprecedented high-wind construction codes. And, University of Florida's Dr. Forrest Masters and Dr. David Prevatt will present findings on new approaches to community design.
