New to SDE's Las Vegas lineup of conferences (which include I Teach K!, I Teach 1st!, National Conference for Singapore Math Strategies, and National Conference on Differentiated Instruction), I Teach 2nd! Is the biggest event of its kind for second grade teachers, and offers them three days of intense focus on the strategies, techniques, tips, and ideas they need to be successful throughout the year. From the opening keynote to the final session, I Teach 2nd! is structured to ensure that every teacher gains innumerable best practices back to the classroom.
"As a second grade teacher, you have the unique responsibility of helping your students practice and build upon the skills they attained in the earlier grades," says Kymra Kurinskas, SDE's program planner. "They need to be able to understand the skills and use them with ease, so that they can end the year ready to enter the world of testing that awaits them in third grade."
"We've designed I Teach 2nd! with this goal in mind," explains Kurinskas. "All sessions are delivered by content-area experts to meet the specific needs of second grade teachers, and offer solutions that are immediately impactful when you use them in your classroom."
The conference focuses on content-specific knowledge, meaningful integration of technology, and classroom best practices. Specific sessions deal with those topics second grade teachers have indicated they are in most need of, such as knowing which intervention strategy to use and when, content-specific strategies to teach complex concepts, such as applying math standards, literacy, and more, and innovative ways to get through the "hard topics."
I Teach 2nd! offers an opening keynote from noted presenter and best-selling author Janiel Wagstaff, who has recently published three new books (Stella Writes…) on the different writing types.
"We are so fortunate to bring Janiel Wagstaff to I Teach 2nd," says Kurinskas. "She has a great reputation and following, and we love how Stella focuses on a second grader — perfect for our second grade teachers."
Other featured presenters include Danny Brassell, Ph.D., Melissa Dickson, Hope King, and Angela Watson. Each speaker was hand-picked for their depth of insight into the latest research, their understanding of the new challenges teachers are facing, and their charismatic training style.
"We've tried to bring together a mix of all the top names in second grade," Kurinskas says. "So, we have a nice mix of expert presenters, popular second grade bloggers, and Teachers Pay Teachers best-sellers."
This conference alleviates some of the anxiety teachers face as they try to prepare students to be college- and career-ready and meet new performance expectations. SDE has created an event that defines exactly what second graders need to know by the end of the year and provides the specific tools students need to use these skills going forward.
Attendees' days will be packed with learning, networking, excitement, and fun. New and experienced teachers will master both the basics every classroom educator needs and the groundbreaking ideas that lead to true transformation. Attendees may choose from over 48 concurrent sessions, in a wide variety of learning formats—including hands-on, make & takes, and video-based see-it-in-action sessions.
The conference is infused with fun throughout, but most especially in its popular "extra's," including a Meet & Greet Event with fellow educators and presenters on July 6th, a Pinterest Party! On July 7th, and a morning Jazzercise session with presenter Rachelle Smith on July 8th. Each day of the conference is also peppered with quick "take-away" tips and author signings.
I Teach 2nd! is the largest second grade conference of its kind, and is developed and programmed by a team of experts with their fingers on the pulse of the latest research and developing trends. Fresh, innovative, impactful—these are the hallmarks of I Teach 2nd! and what makes it the most relevant conference out there for today's second grade teachers.
