SALT LAKE CITY, March 18, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- The National Association of Women in Construction (NAWIC) Salt Lake Chapter 90 is sponsoring a CAD/Design/Drafting Competition for local high school students.
The competition, which is largely supported by Utah-based Big-D Construction, runs through March 24th and introduces students to the construction industry in positive and challenging ways, fosters a sense of self-worth and builds confidence in the participants while encouraging mentoring programs between students, educators and the construction industry.
Students who register for the competition are presented with an architectural design problem, for which they must design a solution and submit their plans for judging. Project drawings must include a minimum of a floor plan, exterior elevation, and site plan with placement of structure – usually just up to five drawings.
The schools that are participating this year are Bonneville, Cottonwood, Fremont, Hunter and Layton High Schools. The entries must be completed and submitted to the chairperson by March 24th, where they will be reviewed and judged by judges selected from within the construction industry. An awards night will be held on Monday, April 7 at the AGC office to present the awards to the students.
The local first place winner's entry will be submitted for Regional Competition. Salt Lake's 2012 regional winner from Layton High School won the National Contest and received a check for $1,500.00.
This year the problem consists of a home for the Madison family, which has 4 grown children and 16 grandchildren. They are downsizing from a 10,000 sf home to a 3,000 sf home, with specific requirements for their new home such as: an open floor plan; master bedroom with a quiet reading area and attached bathroom that must be ADA compliant; kitchen with attached family room containing enough room for a game table that can be used for eating, playing games and includes book shelves; a living and dining room that can accommodate seating for at least 8; two guest rooms with attached bathrooms; laundry room with storage; two–car garage with a small work shop for Mr. Madison; a small greenhouse for Mrs. Madison; and a deck or patio that is wheelchair accessible.
The chapter is looking for sponsors to help with the cost of the dinner and the prizes for the students. If your company is willing to help out, please have them contact Jana Cochell, Chairperson, Big-D Construction (801-415-6029 or [email protected]).
About NAWIC
The National Association of Women in Construction (NAWIC) originally began as Women in Construction of Fort Worth, Texas. Sixteen women working in the construction industry founded it in 1953. Knowing that women represented only a small fraction of the construction industry, the founders organized NAWIC to create a support network. Women in Construction of Fort Worth was so successful that it gained its national charter in 1955 and became the National Association of Women in Construction. Today, NAWIC provides its members with opportunities for professional development, education, networking, leadership training, public service and more. The Salt Lake Chapter will be celebrating their 50th year this spring, and will be hosting a Regional Forum on May 2-3, 2014, which will include speakers and workshops.
