National Archives to Host Conference on Bipartisanship June 16
WASHINGTON, May 14 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The National Archives, in partnership with the U.S. Association of Former Members of Congress (FMC), and the Bipartisan Policy Center (BPC), presents a one-day conference focusing on the issue of bipartisanship Wednesday, June 16, 9 a.m.–5:30 p.m. The daylong conference, which is free and open to the public, celebrates the 40th anniversary of the FMC, and will be held in the William G. McGowan Theater of the National Archives Building in Washington, DC. The public should use the Special Events Entrance to the National Archives, 7th Street and Constitution Avenue, NW.

Conference speakers will explore several aspects of bipartisanship and civility in political discourse within a historical context as well as in today's political climate. David S. Ferriero, Archivist of the United States, will provide opening remarks.
Panel 1: Political Debate on Capitol Hill
This panel will discuss how bipartisanship, or its lack, influences actions on Capitol Hill. Moderated by PBS Journalist Judy Woodruff, panelists include Former Senate Majority Leader Trent Lott, former Speaker of the House Tom Foley, former Member of Congress Martin Frost, and former House Minority Leader Bob Michel.
Panel 2: Political Discourse in the 24-Hour News Cycle
Has the 24-hour news cycle contributed to partisanship in our nation's political discourse? Has the influence of political commentators contributed to this partisanship? Moderated by former Member of Congress Fred Grandy, panelists include Jonathan Karl, senior congressional correspondent for ABC News; Charlie Cook, publisher of The Cook Political Report; Stu Rothenberg, editor and publisher of The Rothenberg Political Report; and Ali Velshi, chief business correspondent for CNN, and host of CNN Newsroom.
Panel 3: Cause and Effects
This panel will summarize the findings of the previous two panels, explore cause and effects, and discuss potential solutions. Panelists include former Member of Congress and current Secretary of Transportation Ray LaHood, former Member of Congress and current Ohio State Senator Tom Sawyer, former Member of Congress Amo Houghton, and former Member of Congress David Skaggs.
