National Alliance for Public Charter Schools Applauds President Obama's Commitment to Education Reform
WASHINGTON, Jan. 27 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Nelson Smith, President and CEO of the National Alliance for Public Charter Schools, released the following statement on the President's State of the Union address:
We applaud President Obama's determination to support expansion of educational opportunity at a time of serious economic challenges, and endorse his position that a well educated nation is the key to economic success.
The President and Secretary of Education Arne Duncan are seeking fundamental reform in American schooling. Their message of innovation and accountability has generated rare bipartisan support -- and nowhere is that more evident than in their commitment to high-quality public charter schools. The President recognizes that the charter model offers hope, especially to disadvantaged students failed by traditional schools. Yet he knows -- and we strongly agree – that charters must stand for quality and be held accountable for performance. That's why the Alliance stressed "quality control" measures such as effective authorizing and clear, data-driven standards for charter renewal in our Model State Charter Law.
We look forward to working with the Administration and Congress to expand public charter schools as a high-quality choice for families, and as a catalyst for fundamental reform of our public education systems.
