NASHVILLE, Tenn., Jan. 21, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- A Dispatcher with the Metro Nashville Emergency Communications Center was honored for her outstanding efforts to aid a citizen in need, using Smart911, the County's latest 9-1-1 service aimed at improving emergency response. Assistant Director Michelle Peterson presented Dispatcher Michelle Naval with a SmartSave Award from Smart911, which recognizes and rewards call takers, dispatchers and emergency responders who are able to effectively use information in a Smart911 Safety Profile to positively affect the outcome of an emergency.

On November 3, 2013, Naval received a call from a citizen in need of medical response. A man was unresponsive in his apartment according to the caller and needed assistance quickly. Naval began processing the call to send appropriate response to the man, who lived in a large complex. Aiding her in this process was the man's Smart911 Safety Profile which immediately displayed vital information when she answered the call.
"The caller wasn't able to tell me about the man's medical history, and he was very panicked and unfocused," stated Naval, a dispatcher of 2.5 years. "His Safety Profile listed Epilepsy in his medical notes and I was able to dispatch EMS response with that information which would help them diagnose and treat him very quickly."
In addition to his medical history, the Safety Profile also listed detailed directions on how to enter the apartment complex, which building he was located in, and which specific apartment he was in, saving responders valuable time.
"We implemented Smart911 in Nashville three years ago for this very reason, to save time and to save lives," said Duane Phillips, Director of Metro Nashville Emergency Communications. "Michelle did an excellent job of utilizing the information in the profile to provide the fastest and most accurate response possible. I am so glad this citizen recognized the benefit of Smart911 and took the time to create his Safety Profile, it may have saved his life."
Smart911 allows citizens to create a Safety Profile for their household that includes any information they want 9-1-1 and response teams to have in the event of an emergency. When a citizen makes an emergency call, their Safety Profile is automatically displayed to the 9-1-1 call taker, allowing them to send the right response teams to the right location with the right information. Responders can be aware of many details they would not have known previously with Smart911. Fire crews can arrive at a house fire knowing how many people live in the home and the location of bedrooms, EMS can be advised of allergies or specific medical conditions, and police can have the photo of a missing child in seconds rather than hours.
Introduced nearly three years ago by Rave Mobile Safety, the most trusted software partner for campus and public safety, Smart911 has been adopted in 33 states and more than 450 municipalities. It has been credited with positively impacting emergency situations across the U.S., including a missing child case in Arkansas, and this emergency in Nashville.
Residents are encouraged to create their Safety Profile with Smart911 today to have their information immediately available to 9-1-1. Smart911 data is private and secure, is only used for emergency responses and available to the 9-1-1 system in the event of an emergency call.
