HAMPTON, Va., July 7, 2014 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- On Tuesday, July 8, at NASA's Langley Research Center in Hampton, Virginia, former NASA engineer and Eagle Aeronautics Director for Projects Domenic Maglieri will present "Sonic Boom: A Review of Six Decades of Research" at 2 p.m. in the Reid Conference Center.
Maglieri will take a look back at how 60 years of aeronautics research has helped to understand the sonic boom, created when aircraft breaks the sound barrier.
Maglieri will be available to answer questions from the media during a news briefing at 1:15 p.m. that day. Media who wish to do so should contact Chris Rink at 757-864-6786, or by e-mail at [email protected], by noon on the day of the talk for credentials and entry to the center.
That same evening at 7:30, Maglieri will present a similar program for the general public at the Virginia Air & Space Center in downtown Hampton. This Sigma Series event is free and no reservations are required.
The production, spread, and prediction of sonic boom has been the topic of hundreds of research papers hoping to improve supersonic flight. Maglieri will discuss some highlights of this research, including imitating and lessening the effects of sonic boom on humans and surrounding buildings, and the characteristics of sonic boom from large and small supersonic aircraft. He will also talk about future research into civilian supersonic overland flight.
After graduating from the University of Pittsburgh in 1951 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical and Aeronautical Engineering, Maglieri began his career with the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics' (NACA) Langley Aeronautical Laboratory, now NASA's Langley Research Center. He is considered one of the leading national and international experts on sonic boom, with over 60 years combined experience in aircraft noise control and measurement from NACA/NASA and Eagle Aeronautics.
