Naropa University Announces 2016 Summer Writing Program Roster
Featured speakers include climate activist Bill McKibben, musicians Thurston Moore, Clark Coolidge, and Janice Lowe, and poets CAConrad, Eileen Myles, and Will Alexander
BOULDER, Colo., May 2, 2016 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Naropa University has opened registration for its 42nd annual Summer Writing Program (SWP). Each year, the SWP brings acclaimed writers, poets, and performers to Boulder to work directly with hundreds of students for a series of week-long intensives and intimate workshops designed to broaden the horizons of writers and artists.
This year's theme is "Indra's Net Poetics," and features such luminaries as Laird Hunt, CAConrad, Joy Harjo, Tisa Bryant, Richard Tuttle, T C Tolbert and Claudia La Rocco. Bill McKibben, the founder of 350.org, will deliver a special public address on the climate crisis, entitled "The Hottest Fight In The Hottest Year."
The SWP is a four-week-long collaboration between students, poets, translators, performance artists, fiction writers, musicians, letterpress printers, Buddhist teachers, editors, and innovators from the world of independent and small press publishing. Writers participate in writing workshops, lectures on activism and poetics, panel discussions on performance and practice, and dynamic poetry slams, among others.
Co-founded by Anne Waldman and the late Allen Ginsberg as an integral part of The Jack Kerouac School, the SWP acts as a third semester in Naropa's accredited MFA degrees in creative writing, and is rooted in open, experimental forms and practices of avant-garde and postmodern writing. The program is open to any interested participant, and all four weeks (or any combination of weeks) can be taken both for-credit and not-for-credit. Students from other institutions or degree programs may also elect to attend for undergraduate or graduate credit.
More information on the program, including registration, can be found at www.naropa.edu/academics/swp.
