NALEO Educational Fund Urges Georgia Governor Veto Arizona-Style Immigration Bill
WASHINGTON, April 15, 2011 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The National Association of Latino Elected and Appointed Officials (NALEO) Educational Fund issued the following statement regarding Georgia HB 87:
"The National Association of Latino Elected and Appointed Officials (NALEO) Educational Fund strongly urges Georgia Governor Nathan Deal to veto HB 87, which yesterday passed the State Senate 37-19 and the State House 112-59.
"The bill automatically becomes law in 40 days if Gov. Deal does not sign or veto it.
"Georgia's HB 87 is an unconstitutional and costly measure that will jeopardize the public safety of all Georgians, violate their civil rights and subject Georgia's Latinos and newcomers to discrimination.
The bill contains several unconstitutional provisions that attempt to supersede federal immigration laws and will likely result in expensive litigation for Georgia, as it has in Arizona with the terribly flawed SB 1070 measure."
