NACD Launches New eLearning Course to Help Professionals Advance Their Board Careers
Course Identifies Proven Strategies for Current Directors and Aspiring Directors
NEW YORK, Jan. 27, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- As corporate governance practices draw intense public scrutiny and more demands are placed on public company directors, the National Association of Corporate Directors (NACD) has launched a Web-based, Internet-delivered course to help current and aspiring directors learn the skills they need to succeed. The eLearning course, entitled "How to Be(come) a Director," offers exclusive content drawn from the experiences of leading corporate governance experts including directors of Fortune 500 companies and scholars at prominent academic institutions in an online format that allows participants to learn at their own pace from any location.
"Expectations and scrutiny of corporate boards from shareowners and regulators are at all-time highs. Directors and executives – and those who want to have those leadership roles – must equip themselves to handle greater responsibility," said Ken Daly, the president and CEO of NACD. "As boards evaluate their composition in light of new business complexities, heightened awareness of risk and unrelenting time demands among other matters, there is an urgent need for a comprehensive program to address the essentials of board governance: ethics, accountability and competence. 'How to Be(come) a Director' not only meets those needs, but also provides an introduction to the NACD network of connections – an invaluable resource for leaders as they grow their companies and their careers."
Designed in partnership with University of Delaware's Weinberg Center for Corporate Governance, this online course goes beyond traditional training programs by offering a practical solution to advancing board leadership. NACD's Web-based eLearning course provides training on boardroom best practices, fiduciary responsibilities, essential directorship skills, the board selection process, understanding committees, and much more over the Internet. "How to Be(come) a Director" is designed specifically for all aspiring directors and current directors who want to be more valuable to their boards and shareholders. NACD seeks to attract a diverse mix of business leaders – C-suite executives, corporate governance experts and board candidates – committed to the highest ethical standards in the boardroom.
"America needs directors who have prepared themselves for governance," said Delaware Supreme Court Chief Justice Myron Steele, a contributor to the course. "Course participants give themselves an advantage over other board candidates because they are equipped to perform efficiently and effectively as directors. The course looks at tangible skill sets as well as more intangible, but extremely valuable traits such as courage."
Experts featured in the eLearning course include Denny Beresford, director at Fannie Mae, Kimberly-Clark Corporation and Legg Mason; Reatha Clark King, director at General Mills Foundation and formerly at Exxon Mobil Corporation, and Professor Charles M. Elson, the director of the John L. Weinberg Center for Corporate Governance at the University of Delaware.
The self-paced, online program allows individuals to take the course at their own pace from anywhere in the world as long as they have an Internet connection. Repeat access to the course gives participants the flexibility to review certain sections again for better understanding. In addition, the core course content is supplemented by multiple print downloads that can be used to build a personal corporate governance library, as well as video, bonus materials and knowledge checks for participants to see how much they've learned.
