BOYERTOWN, Pa., Aug. 9, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- ClimeCo America Corporation (ClimeCo) announces the passing of a major technology milestone - the first successfully implemented Tertiary Nitrous Oxide (N2O) Abatement System (Abatement System) in the U.S., a project at Rentech Energy Midwest Corporation (REMC) developed under the Climate Action Reserve (CAR) Nitric Acid Protocol.

The REMC Nitric Acid Unit #1 Abatement system went live June 29th. Since then, hourly data queries consistently surpass expectations.
REMC selected ClimeCo America Corporation to develop the project based on demonstrated market leadership in N2O abatement; carbon offset development and extensive Nitric Acid knowledge. Contributing partners included ClimeCo's engineering partner O'Brien & Gere; Northwest Mechanical; Jackson Concrete; EcoChem Analytics; and Westphal Electrical.
The tertiary abatement system utilizes a C-NAT (Nitrous Oxide Abatement Technology) catalyst manufactured by CRI Catalyst Company to directly decompose N2O from industrial and chemical processes and convert it into naturally occurring nitrogen (N2) and oxygen (O2). The C-NAT catalyst does not require the addition of any reducing agent or other reactant, and forms no undesirable by-products.
"The voluntary abatement of N2O in the Nitric Acid sector is accelerating. We believe the voluntary mechanism benefits far outweigh regulatory mandates, and we would like to see USEPA support this approach as they have with other voluntary programs that promote the reduction of greenhouse gases such as high-GWP fluorinated gases and methane," stated project developer and ClimeCo executive vice president William Flederbach. "The benefits are substantial - REMC is voluntarily reducing GHG emissions while using carbon credit revenue to repay project installation costs."
Each metric tonne of N2O is equivalent to 310 metric tonnes of CO2. REMC anticipates that the Nitric Acid Unit #1 Abatement System will reduce emissions by ~150,000 metric tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent (CO2e) per year.
