PORTLAND, Ore., July 27, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- ACME AtronOmatic, LLC, makers of the popular MyRadar Weather and information app, announces a new data overlay feature, the Wildfires layer. This new overlay highlights documented wildfires across the United States and includes specific details on each fire including their intensity.
The data is curated from numerous official sources, including the United States Geological Survey, Inciweb, the Risk Incident Information Management System by the United States Forest Service and others, and highlights those areas on the map with an icon. In areas where complete geographical fire boundaries are available, MyRadar will draw the contained shape on the map. Users can then tap on each fire to bring up additional information about the fire, including containment status, initial cause (if known), size of the fire, and a greater detailed narrative from the firefighting agency, when available.
"As we enter the wildfire season in various spots around the country, the Wildfire layer can be an invaluable tool to help stay on top of the latest danger zones around the country," said Andrew Green, CEO of ACME AtronOmatic. "In addition, when used with the animated surface Winds layer that MyRadar provides, it can help residents and interested parties get an overall understanding of the natural forces driving the fire and can even help municipalities plan for air quality concerns."
"The new Wildfire feature is particularly useful in light of the recent California wildfires," Green continued.
MyRadar receives radar data from around the country directly from each individual radar station, and processes that data on its own server farms in real-time to render the most accurate, up-to-date weather picture available on any mobile device. This direct access to weather telemetry opens up capabilities that allow MyRadar to work with the raw data, enabling more useful and innovative services directly to user fingertips.
Through the photo sharing section of the MyRadar app, users can upload photos of the fire (taken from a safe distance) and can act as a mini news-agency, keeping community members aware of the conditions in the area and elevating the overall situational awareness for concerned users.
The new feature is available for free, and included in the base version of MyRadar, a free download.
