MyDoorSign.com Gives All-Gender Restroom Signage a Makeover

NEW YORK, July 24, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- MyDoorSign.com redesigned its all-gender sign collection after receiving criticism for the old graphics. The new designs feature simple iconography and a clear "all-gender restroom" descriptor. The innovative look grew from social justice advocate, Sam Killermann and his blog, It's Pronounced Metrosexual.

MyDoorSign.com previously worked to create a safe bathroom space for those who do not identify with cisgender options. Despite inclusive intentions, the company used a cisgender-based icon that appeared as "half man, half woman." The company contacted Sam Killermann, the author behind the critical post. Killermann introduced the idea of a simple toilet icon to identify the room's purpose rather than its occupants.

In addition to the new iconography, Killermann discussed the difference between "gender-neutral" and "all-gender" signage with the MyDoorSign.com team. "Gender-neutral" refers to a specific gender identity, while "all-gender" is inclusive of all gender identities. MyDoorSign.com changed its signs to reflect its goal of inclusiveness.

The signs are ADA-compliant and include Grade II Braille. Alternate versions of the signs feature California's required geometric sign pattern. Local municipalities will have details about specific color or compliance requirements for private businesses.
