Muzzy Lane Software Awarded Digital Courseware Research Grant
Research and Planning Grant from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation to Explore Applications of Game-Based Digital Courseware in Postsecondary Education
NEWBURYPORT, Mass., Feb. 26, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- Muzzy Lane Software today announced that it has been selected by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation to explore game-based-learning as a core student activity in competency-based postsecondary education. Muzzy Lane will create proof-of-concept courseware targeting low-income students' college success and completion rates.
"Non-traditional students often struggle with traditional pedagogy," said project advisor Chris Dede, the Timothy E. Wirth Professor in Learning Technologies at the Harvard Graduate School of Education. "Courses designed for low income and disadvantaged learners must allow students to develop competency while building their motivation to succeed."
Muzzy Lane brings significant experience delivering game-based learning solutions to the higher education market. Regardless of discipline, learn-by-doing products offer safe and engaging environments where failure is always temporary and students feel more in control.
"Mastery-based challenges, focused on solving problems in a meaningful context with immediate feedback, are the keys to creating learning experiences that teach 21st Century skills at scale," said David Martz, Vice President of Muzzy Lane. "We are thrilled to have the support of the Gates Foundation as we explore innovative approaches to better serve non-traditional learners pursuing postsecondary credentials."
Under the grant, Muzzy Lane will work closely with a broad range of colleges and universities to identify opportunities, barriers, and success factors for mainstream adoption of game-based learning.
Muzzy Lane participated in the Gates Foundation's Next Generation Courseware Challenge and welcomes this opportunity to advance this innovative approach to the next level. Muzzy Lane will present its findings on this research and planning grant in early 2016.
