NEW YORK, Sept. 23, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- A Great Big World speaks loud and clear on the new single "Say Something" (iTunes Link: http://smarturl.it/saysomething)—the title track of their forthcoming EP for Epic Records, out October 15 via all digital retailers.
Making its television debut on Fox's So You Think You Can Dance during a poignant and passionate performance by show victor Amy Yakima, choreographed by Stacey Tookey, the song instantly resonated with audiences everywhere. Immediately after airing, the track climbed up the iTunes Top Singles Chart as listeners identified with its message. It went on to become one of the highest selling-songs this season and had the largest increase in sales of any song following placement on the show. This follows up a bevy of notable placements for the duo of Ian Axel and Chad Vaccarino.
In discussing the track, Ian reveals, "It's a very special song to us, and we are thrilled to see how many people have been able to identify with it." Chad goes on, "We're also amazed by the response from So You Think You Can Dance. It was truly an honor to hear the song on the show, and we're beyond grateful for the opportunity."
Spreading a sense of hope, the group's songs will also be featured prominently in the world television premiere of the original live-action drama, Contest. It airs on Cartoon Network on Sunday, October 6th at 6pm EST in collaboration with their "Stop Bullying: Speak Up" campaign. With its heartfelt anti-bullying message, the film comes just in time for National Bullying Prevention Month (October), and it proved to be the perfect fit for A Great Big World.
On the strength of their 2012 independent EP, which they funded through a highly successful Kickstarter campaign, music supervisors first embraced the group's elegantly crafted and emotionally evocative tunes. The cast of Glee covered their anthem, "This Is the New Year", in a pivotal show moment. The song has also served as the title track for the movie New Year's Eve as well as the theme for MTV's I Used To Be Fat with additional syncs on Amazing Race, One Tree Hill, ESPN, and Good Morning America.
Ian and Chad first became friends while enrolled at NYU and studying the music business. At first, Chad encouraged Ian to start singing and actually became his manager, but they soon realized they were kindred spirits creatively, forging a musical partnership. As they developed a devout New York and online following, it opened the door to much bigger things to come.
Press response has been unanimously positive. Perez Hilton called them, "Quirky and sweet", they were handpicked as Elvis Duran and The Today Show's "Artist of the Month" for July, Billboard labeled them as "Bubbling Under," Entertainment Weekly proclaimed "Check out an excellent single that sounds like fun. the band" in reference to "This Is The New Year." In addition, the LGBT community embraced their stop-motion video for "Everyone Is Gay", making it a viral hit. With its unifying message and delightful harmonies, Queerty.com called it "kind of amazing", while AndPop.com described it as "an upbeat, happy song to remind us that we're all equal and should be free to choose the life we want!"
Still, "Say Something" offers a proper gateway into A Great Big World. The song remains a delicate ballad carried by emotional and entrancing vocals and resounding piano chords. It's a proclamation of the New York duo's immense songwriting talent and knack for a universal and unforgettable hook. In addition to "Say Something", the EP features "This is the New Year", "There Is An Answer", and "Everyone Is Gay". It encompasses every facet of their instantly irresistible sound from the shimmering piano melodies to the poetic lyricism. Their voice needs to be heard.
Just prior to the EP's release, A Great Big World will embark on a U.S. tour starting October 10 in Pittsburgh, PA. In between dates alongside 2CELLOS, the group is set to headline as well. Be prepared for a powerful and theatrical performance whenever they hit the stage.
Welcome to A Great Big World.
