Musculoskeletal Network Features Update on Nutraceuticals for Osteoarthritis
NORWALK, Conn., Aug. 24, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- UBM Medica US today announced that Musculoskeletal Network, an online resource for unique and efficient techniques on the management of musculoskeletal disorders, now features an update on nutraceuticals and other nonpharmacological interventions for knee osteoarthritis.
Providing effective intervention to avoid long-term disability in osteoarthritis is difficult, say authors Vijay B. Vad, MD, Hospital for Special Surgery and Weill Cornell Medical College, and Stanley H. Dysart, MD, Pinnacle Orthopaedics & Sports Medicine Specialists. But studies of nonpharmacological interventions indicate they may help:
- Meta-analyses have shown that administration of glucosamine/chondroitin sulfate can decrease joint-space narrowing and other radiographic markers of disease progression.
- Adding omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids—eicosapentaenoic acid and docosahexaenoic acid—to glucosamine sulfate showed benefit when a criterion of pain reduction of 80% or greater was used.
- A proprietary complex of curcumin with soy phosphatidylcholine has shown efficacy.
This is the second article in a 3-part osteoarthritis series on Musculoskeletal Network. Part 1 offered a rationale for early treatment. In the third article, the authors will provide an overview of systemic pharmacotherapy.
