The first lot, Enhanced Techniques for Distributing and Managing Digital Video Content, is comprised of one US issued patent and several foreign counterparts which have been cited by Microsoft, Apple, Intel, Unisys, and Philips. The assets in this lot provide for an improved system for digital video playback over a network. The system utilizes a centralized video buffer element which stores and controls portions of the video at the user's end, eliminating the need to store the video content on the user's computer and includes a status manager that controls data transmission to ensure smooth video playback while enabling an efficient usage of bandwidth. Although this lot will be offered at the auction, it can be purchased immediately, in advance of the auction through ICAP Ocean Tomo's Purchase Now feature.
The second lot, Network Bandwidth Optimization, includes six US issued patents, two US applications, and several foreign counterparts. Developed as the basis for a working media delivery platform, these assets have been cited by Microsoft, Nokia, Broadcom, Adobe, and Samsung. The IP in this portfolio addresses the most important challenge to content providers, constraints on available bandwidth. The solutions disclosed by the assets include algorithms with constraint expressions to determine flow rates and acceptance of new clients, as well as liner programming techniques that work to solve expressions in scenarios such as multiple-rate tariffs and time-of-day bandwidth variations. This lot can also be purchased via ICAP Ocean Tomo's Purchase Now feature.
"While, as Burst.com, Inc., we have been proud to be in the forefront of media delivery technology for two decades, our strategic redirection (under a new name, Democrasoft, Inc.) into the area of cloud-based decision-making software – social networking with a purpose – has made these patent portfolios non-core assets," said Richard Lang, Chairman and CEO of Democrasoft, Inc.
"This technology includes fundamental components of multimedia content management and distribution that is used in the market today," said ICAP Ocean Tomo CEO Dean Becker. "These lots should be considered valuable assets to entities involved in content distribution, cloud computing, video hosting, and digital data management."
