TOKYO, Oct. 1, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- MUFG, one of the world's leading financial institutions, today announced that Professor Merit E. Janow, Dean of Columbia University's School of International and Public Affairs (SIPA), has joined its Global Advisory Board.
For over 20 years, Professor Janow has been a Professor of Practice at SIPA and affiliated faculty at Columbia Law School. She teaches graduate courses in international trade/World Trade Organization (WTO) law, comparative antitrust law, China in the global economy, international trade and investment policy, among others. She was named Dean of SIPA in 2013.
While at Columbia, Professor Janow was elected in December 2003 to a four-year term as one of the seven members of the WTO's Appellate Body, the court of final appeal for adjudicating trade disputes between the Organization's 153 member nations. The first woman to serve on the Appellate Body, Professor Janow was involved in more than 30 appeals.
From 1997 to 2000, Professor Janow served as the Executive Director of the first international antitrust advisory committee of the U.S. Department of Justice that reported to the Attorney General and the Assistant Attorney General for Antitrust.
Prior to joining Columbia's faculty, she was Deputy Assistant U.S. Trade Representative for Japan and China (1989-93), where she was responsible for developing, coordinating and implementing U.S. trade policies with Japan and China.
Professor Janow holds a JD degree from Columbia University Law School and a BA in Asian Studies with honors from the University of Michigan. She is also a member of the Council on Foreign Relations and the Trilateral Commission.
MUFG's Global Advisory Board serves as an advisory body to its Executive Committee. The Board is made up of members from Japan, Europe, Asia, and the Americas who are external experts in areas such as corporate management, financial regulation, and government policy. It provides advice and recommendations on group-wide management, global governance, business strategy, and other management issues from an independent standpoint.
