EDEN PRAIRIE, MN, Aug. 16, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- MTS Systems Corporation (NASDAQ: MTSC), a leading global supplier of high-performance test systems and sensors, recently hosted the first worldwide users group comprising leading seismic researchers and renowned experts on earthquakes, tsunamis and other catastrophic geologic events. The group's objective is to help ensure that earthquake-affected populations are better protected through improvements in structural design and the use of advanced materials in buildings, bridges and other civil infrastructure. They meet this goal by conducting realistic, large-scale testing and simulation experiments using MTS test systems.
The new 'MTS Worldwide Seismic Solutions Users Group' provides a platform for ongoing knowledge exchange. It brings together respected academics and industry authorities from across Asia, North America and Europe to discuss the latest developments in seismic analysis. The inaugural meeting of this group took place on August 7 and 8, in Tainan City, Taiwan, near the National Center for Research on Earthquake Engineering (NCREE) facility. This meeting coincided with the Grand Opening Ceremony of the new NCREE Tainan Testing Laboratory featuring newly commissioned MTS testing equipment, including a high performance 8 meter x 8 meter shake table and one of the world's largest isolation bearing testers that MTS designed.
As well as sharing key information about new research paths and test techniques, the user group also provides MTS engineers with a valuable opportunity to learn more about the specific challenges these experts in seismic research currently face. Based on the learnings, MTS is developing next generation products and services for seismic research and building certification. Following the success of this first meeting, the intention is to further expand the group, thereby encouraging continued high level dialogue to benefit all mankind.
"Mitigating the risks posed to society by seismic activity is something that we have taken very seriously for decades, motivating us to form this user group. With such a large proportion of the world's population now located in areas that are prone to earthquakes, engineering innovation to help safeguard against the loss of life due to seismic events is of increasing importance," said Dr. Jeffrey Graves, MTS President and CEO. "This user group is generating discussions between the most prominent and influential figures in this field, with delegates from all over the globe involved in our first meeting. Over the course of many years, we have built close relationships with these individuals and the organizations they represent. We are thus uniquely positioned to facilitate interactions of this kind. By listening to those attending and gaining an understanding of the direction that their work is going, we will be able to introduce next generation test and simulation solutions to help them achieve their objectives," he concludes.
