KANSAS CITY, Mo., Feb. 17, 2014 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- MRIGlobal today announced that Eric Van Gieson, Ph.D., has joined the organization as Senior Director of Biosurveillance Programs.

Dr. Van Gieson comes to MRIGlobal after serving as the Chief of the Diagnostics, Disease Surveillance, and Threat Detection Division within the Defense Threat Reduction Agency (DTRA).
In the DTRA role, he worked across industry and government agencies to foster the linkage of home-use and point-of-care diagnostics with health surveillance capabilities, especially in resource-limited environments. In addition, he started a number of robotics and field-automation initiatives that relied upon autonomous vehicles to enable sensitive site analysis and sample collection.
Prior to serving in DTRA, he worked as a program manager for military diagnostics within the Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory.

Dr. Van Gieson has a Ph.D. in Biomedical Engineering and a B.S. in Chemical Engineering from the University of Virginia. He has worked in industry and government settings and has publications on topics ranging from genomic analysis to unmanned systems autonomy. He led several technology survey efforts for the Department of Defense in diagnostics and has supported several major diagnostics acquisition and science and technology programs. Most recently, Dr. Van Gieson served as a reviewer on the Nokia Sensing XChallenge on behalf of the XPrize Foundation.
