NEW YORK, Nov. 19, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- Mutual of America announced today that the Move For Hunger Program was named a Merit Finalist award recipient in the 2015 Community Partnership Award competition.
Started in 2009, Move For Hunger partners with more than 630 socially responsible moving companies across the country in an arrangement that makes it easy for people who are relocating to donate, rather than discard, unopened, shelf-stable food items that they'd prefer not to move. Move For Hunger offers to collect nonperishable food items from people and deliver them at no cost to community food banks.
The organization also collaborates with 1,500 real estate professionals and relocation management companies to encourage food donations from people who are moving. These partnerships have enabled Move For Hunger to create one of the nation's largest year-round service programs, delivering the equivalent of more than 4.1 million meals to food banks across the U.S. and Canada.
"Millions of Americans move each year," said Adam Lowy, founder and Executive Director of Move For Hunger. "Our goal is to make it easy for people to empty their cupboards and lighten their load by donating their unwanted food to community food banks. In doing so, individuals who are relocating can help to make a difference in the fight against hunger."
