Mount Vernon Presents George Washington's Overdue Book to The New York Society Library 221 Years Later
Copy of Overdue Book, Ledger, and Washington's Original Books on Display at Event
NEW YORK, May 17 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- A small missing piece of American history comes home on May 19 after 221 years: a copy of a book borrowed by the first President of the United States was returned to the library from which he borrowed it in New York City.
WHAT: Historic Mount Vernon's President will present The New York Society Library with a copy of a book that George Washington borrowed and never returned. "The Law of Nations" was checked out by the first president on October 5, 1789 at The New York Society Library. While searching for copies of Washington's books for the future Fred W. Smith National Library for the Study of George Washington, Mount Vernon's librarian came across the book title and purchased a replacement in the same edition in order to return it to its rightful owner and to clear George Washington's name from the possibility of 221 years of overdue fines.
In addition to accepting the missing book, the New York Society Library staff will have the original ledger that shows George Washington checked out the book in person. During the event, original books from George Washington's library at Mount Vernon will be on display.
