Mount Vernon Launches Pango Mobile Payments for Parking on November 5th
Kicks Off New Parking System with Free Parking & Community Celebration
Press Conference Wednesday November 5 at 11 am City Hall - 1 Roosevelt Square, Mount Vernon, New York
NEW YORK, Nov. 5, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- The City of Mount Vernon is set to introduce drivers to a new way of paying for and finding available metered parking. Starting November 5, drivers can use their mobile phones and the Pango mobile app for instant access to available parking spaces. Most cities in the New York tri-state area require coin payment but Mount Vernon will be among a small group giving drivers more convenience and choice. Currently being used in New York City and Auburn, the Pango system allows tech savvy drivers to use their cellphones when paying for metered parking; the system remembers where a vehicle is parked and allows users to share a parking session with Facebook friends.
"The addition of this technology will certainly improve the quality of driving experience in the city because now drivers have options to pay for parking," said Mayor Ernest D. Davis. "While other municipalities make you get out of your car to pay for parking, Pango will help us tackle some common complaints from drivers about convenience, congestion, and driver safety."
The city will launch Pango over a two-week period starting on November 5th where Mayor Ernest D. Davis, Police Commissioner Terrance Raynor and Deputy Police Commissioners Richard Burke, Reginald Ward and Gaylord Worrell will hold a press conference and ribbon cutting ceremony at City Hall, 1 Roosevelt Square at 11 a.m. The City has over 2,275 parking spaces serving both the downtown retail and Fleetwood commuter areas.
Neil Edwards, President of Pango said, "Mount Vernon is one of the leading cities making their downtown parking system easy and convenient for drivers to use. We are excited about partnering with Mount Vernon and our ability to help make a difference in the city."
Pango and the City will be hosting two welcome events aimed at educating the community about the system's advantages. On November 5th from 3PM to 8PM residents can learn more about Pango during an open house event at Maggie Spillane's Ale House, 575 Gramatan Avenue. On November 12 another event will be held at the African American Club, 216 East 3rd Street from 3PM to 8PM. Guests who sign up for Pango will receive five hours of free parking (good until December 31). Free food, hats, and tee shirts will be distributed at both locations.
Deputy Police Commissioner Gaylord Worrell who oversees the City's Parking Bureau said, "Mayor Davis and the City Council want Mount Vernon to be a place where visitors and residents can enjoy activities without worrying about finding parking and then having to get exact change to feed meters. With Pango drivers can park more frequently because much of the hassle has been removed. An added benefit of the system will be the additional revenue generated in the city's downtown area once shoppers get used to the new system's easy to use features."
Drivers can sign up to use the Pango service by going to www.myPango.com and downloading the app which is available for iOS, Android, Windows Mobile and Blackberry devices. They can also call 1-800-myPango (1-877-697-2646). Registration information and a method of payment is all that's needed to be on your way to easy paying for parking through Pango. Clearly marked signs and decals placed around the city will provide directions on how to park with Pango. Drivers not wanting to use this service have the option to pay by phone or continue to feeding coins to parking meters.
Pango, headquartered in New York City and Israel, is considered the company that invented the science behind the first pay-by-phone parking app and was awarded US Patent (5,940,481) in 1997. It is one of the only companies in the world to provide on street, gated, valet, event, electronic permits, and fleet-based parking services through an app and is a member of the International Parking Institute. Pango works on I-Phone, Android, Windows Mobile, and Blackberry platforms. For more information on Pango, please visit www.myPango.com or contact at [email protected].
