Motley Rice Adds Two Members, Expands Public Client Experience
Former D.C. Attorney General to lead and grow firm's practice
WASHINGTON, Feb. 6, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- Motley Rice LLC, one of the nation's largest plaintiffs' firms, is bolstering its experience representing public entities in consumer and financial fraud, health care and other litigation by adding two new member attorneys and expanding its Washington, D.C. office. Linda Singer and Mimi Y. Liu are now member attorneys with the firm, and Singer will lead the firm's Public Client practice.
Singer has spent significant time in public service, including previously serving as the Attorney General of the District of Columbia, which, with more than 350 attorneys, was the seventh-largest state attorney general office in the nation. She also served as Executive Director of the Appleseed Foundation, a network of public interest law centers in the United States and Mexico.
She brings extensive experience working with state and local government in investigations and complex litigation. These include the first cases filed against Bank of America and other large national banks for their lending, servicing, and foreclosure practices at the heart of the mortgage crisis, and litigation on behalf of the Virgin Islands against an oil refinery that abruptly closed its doors despite having received hundreds of millions of dollars in tax credits. Singer is a leader in the litigation related to the alleged fraudulent marketing of addictive opioid prescription painkillers, which has allegedly caused an epidemic of addiction resulting in billions of dollars of medical costs to government and more deaths than gun homicides this year. She also has successfully litigated or settled cases against credit bureaus, nursing homes, and for-profit colleges. She is a graduate of Harvard University and Harvard Law School. The National Law Journal recognized Singer in 2010 as being one of "Washington's Most Influential Women Lawyers."
"I have been fortunate to assist attorneys general and other public entities throughout the country in important and high-impact litigation representing the interests and needs of their states and citizens," said Singer. "There are so many important, and in some cases, life-threatening, issues facing Americans today that deserve the attention of public servants willing to fight for them. The support, resources and experience at Motley Rice can be used to enable government enforcers to level the playing field and take on large-scale, complex investigations and litigation that they wouldn't otherwise be able to, protecting the best interests of their constituents."
Liu also brings robust experience representing state attorneys general in diverse investigations and enforcement actions. Working with Singer, she has represented numerous public clients in litigation involving unfair and deceptive practices in debt collection, credit reporting, and credit ratings, and related to the marketing of addictive prescription painkillers opioids. She has also represented a state in litigating for consumers harmed or who suffered economic loss due to the deceptive marketing of defective Takata airbags related to the largest auto-related recall in U.S. history.
Liu advocated for constitutional civil rights as a senior lawyer for Planned Parenthood Federation of America, arguing cases before numerous state and federal trial and appeals courts. Following Harvard Law School, she clerked for the Court of Appeals of Alberta and for the Honorable Justice Claire L'Heureux-Dubé of the Supreme Court of Canada.
Singer and Liu's history of litigation and public service make them fitting additions to Motley Rice, a firm whose attorneys are well known for collaborating with more than two dozen state attorneys general to spearhead groundbreaking Big Tobacco litigation and reaching the $246 billion Master Settlement Agreement*. By joining Motley Rice, they build on the firm's legacy and its commitment to the pursuit of justice and accountability.
"Linda and Mimi bring extensive experience and leadership in working with attorneys general and government entities," said Motley Rice co-founder Joe Rice. "The civil justice system has, over the years, become increasingly important in enforcing laws against even the biggest wrongdoers. The clients Linda and Mimi have worked with have been at the forefront of battling and winning complex cases involving some of this country's most egregious fraud. I applaud and respect these clients for their leadership and look forward to supporting them in future groundbreaking litigation."
